Economics and the innocent

RH and I were at the Humane Society today. At least one of the critters had on his identification card that his owners had fallen on hard times, lost jobs and home, and had no way to keep him. There were a number of other well-groomed, well-fed, people-loving fuzzies there . . . enough to make me wonder just how common this story is and will become. :(
